The Sixth Mass Extinction is not a future prophecy; it is a diagnosis of the present. In just the last 50 years, humanity has destroyed 73% of all vertebrates and 80% of all insects. Wild mammals now represent only 4% of the total weight of all mammals on Earth, with the rest being humans and our livestock. The extinction of the large dinosaurs took 33,000 years; at today's rate, it would take just 33. The irony is as profound as it is tragic: the intelligence that brought us to this precipice is now being looked upon as the only tool large enough to pull us back. As biodiversity expert Dr. Frauke Fischer stated, "Natural intelligence obviously brought us to the brink of the sixth mass extinction — and now we hope that artificial intelligence might help us to prevent this".

The Architecture of Conservation

AGI's role in this crisis is not to replace human action, but to act as a cognitive amplifier, enabling us to perceive the scale of our own impact. Its current applications are already demonstrating its potential as a sentinel for the biosphere.

AI-driven acoustic monitoring in Spain's parks is now tracking Bonelli's eagles and bat colonies, revealing how human activity impacts these vulnerable species in real-time.

  • The Listening Planet: Initiatives like Project CETI are using AI to decode sperm whale communication, moving us closer to a future where we might hold a two-way conversation with another species. This is not just about understanding; it is about fundamentally recalibrating our relationship with the biosphere, treating other species as subjects of conversation, not just objects of study.

The Governance of Survival

However, the tool is not neutral. AI itself is a significant ecological actor. Current AI models have large energy and water demands; the supply chains for semiconductors rely on ecologically intensive mining that could pose an existential threat to the planet. There is currently no structure in place to ensure this rapid technological innovation is accountable to planetary health.

The Justice-First Pluralist Framework (JFPF), a model for AGI governance, reveals a sobering reality: only about 8–15% of simulated trajectories satisfy ecological sustainability, distributive fairness, and procedural legitimacy simultaneously. Justice-compatible outcomes are statistically rare and do not arise spontaneously. The framework identifies a critical structural paradox: gains in efficiency can accelerate ecological degradation, as the capability to optimise resources also drives exponential scaling and increased energy demands.

The Fork in the Road

The end of the Sixth Era is a fork in the road, and AGI is a critical lever. The current trajectory is one where AGI is a "force multiplier" for ecological degradation. The other path is one of "bounded optimisation," where AGI is deliberately restrained to remain within planetary boundaries. The question is not whether we will deploy AGI, but whether we will have the wisdom to ensure that its intelligence serves the health of the planet and its people. As the BMJ editorial concluded, action on AI and the planetary crisis needs "an ethical and systems-based lens for governance, that emphasises socio-ecological wellbeing, long term and intergenerational impacts, and includes equity and justice as preconditions for sustainability".
