From AI-driven platforms that translate tribal languages in real time to interactive systems that learn new languages through dialogue rather than static datasets, artificial general intelligence is emerging as a powerful tool for linguistic preservation and cross-cultural communication. But as technology accelerates the documentation of endangered languages, the question is no longer whether AGI can help—it is whether we can ensure that communities retain sovereignty over their linguistic heritage.

A Language Crisis Unfolding

The scale of language loss is staggering. Of the world's 7,159 living languages, Africa alone is home to over 3,000 indigenous languages, accounting for approximately one-third of global linguistic diversity. Yet these languages account for less than 1% of NLP research output. In India, 461 tribal languages are spoken, with 81 vulnerable and 42 critically endangered. Many face the risk of extinction due to limited documentation and intergenerational transmission gaps.

The consequences are not merely cultural—they are existential. When a language dies, it takes with it unique knowledge systems, cultural expressions, and ways of understanding the world. Adi Vaani—India's first AI-powered translator for tribal languages—exemplifies the potential of AGI-driven preservation. Developed by a national consortium led by IIT Delhi, the platform enables real-time translation between Hindi/English and tribal languages including Santali, Bhili, Mundari, and Gondi. It offers text-to-text, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and speech-to-speech translations, along with optical character recognition for digitizing manuscripts.

The NüshuRescue framework, presented at COLING 2025, demonstrates how large language models can revitalize endangered languages with minimal data. The system achieved 48.69% translation accuracy using only 35 short examples, generating a new dataset of 98 translated modern Chinese sentences. This is a paradigm shift from data-hungry to data-efficient learning.

For languages that exist primarily through oral traditions, researchers are proposing open-ended, interactive language discovery, where AI systems learn new languages dynamically through dialogue rather than static datasets. AI-powered real-time translation is already being deployed by companies like Zillow for voice assistants, Priceline for travel management, and Vimeo for real-time video translation. Deutsche Telekom is testing the model for multilingual voice interactions, where lower latency and stronger fluency can make cross-language conversations feel more natural.

The Governance Imperative: Data Sovereignty and Community Control

The integration of AGI into language preservation raises critical governance questions. As one study warns, "these technological interventions raise ethical and epistemological concerns about linguistic data sovereignty—the right of communities to control how their languages are represented, stored, and utilized in digital systems". AI can be "a potential vector of digital colonialism," centralising control of linguistic datasets within corporate or academic infrastructures.

Projects that integrate community-led design and ethical data governance demonstrate "higher sustainability and cultural authenticity". The Ministry of Tribal Affairs emphasizes community participation in data collection, validation, and iterative development. This reflects a broader principle: "digital resurrection of endangered languages requires a framework grounded in data justice and participatory co-creation".

A Shared Horizon

For Global Future Nexus, the role of AGI in language preservation and translation is central to the mission of unlocking borderless human potential. The question is no longer whether AGI can help preserve endangered languages—it already is. The question is whether we will build the governance frameworks to ensure that this preservation is equitable, respectful of community sovereignty, and aligned with human flourishing.
