Founded with a historic $500 million gift from Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Harvard's Kempner Institute has built one of the most powerful academic AI clusters in the world—a 1,144-GPU supercomputer delivering 1.8 exaFLOPS of performance, designed not merely to keep pace with industry but to redefine what academic research can achieve in the pursuit of understanding intelligence.

A Bold Bet on the Future of Intelligence

In December 2021, Harvard University launched the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural and Artificial Intelligence, backed by a landmark $500 million gift from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan '07. The institute's mission is as ambitious as its funding: to understand the basis of intelligence in natural and artificial systems by recruiting and training future generations of researchers to study intelligence from biological, cognitive, engineering, and computational perspectives.

The institute is an interdisciplinary initiative of the Provost's Office, not housed in any one school or department within Harvard. Its core mission is to innovate and advance the field of intelligence research and devise solutions to complex problems for the benefit of humanity. The gift supports new faculty appointments, significant computing infrastructure, and resources to allow students to flow between labs in pursuit of ideas and knowledge.

The Cluster: One of the Largest Academic AI Clusters in the World

The Kempner AI cluster is one of the largest and fastest academic AI clusters in the world, with 1,144 GPUs providing a theoretical peak performance of 1.8 ExaFLOPS (BF16). An exaFLOP is a quintillion—a billion billion—mathematical operations per second, meaning that in a single minute the cluster can perform a task that would take a personal computer several years to complete.

The cluster's architecture is a carefully curated mix of NVIDIA's most advanced processors:

  • 424 NVIDIA H200 GPUs—the latest generation of NVIDIA's flagship AI accelerators

  • 384 NVIDIA H100 GPUs—the industry standard for large-scale AI training

  • 144 NVIDIA A100 GPUs—the foundation upon which the cluster was built

  • 192 RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs—the newest addition, enabling advanced optical and physics-based simulations

All the GPUs are linked in a single, purpose-built system designed to help researchers train, test, and refine large-scale AI models supporting work in machine learning, neuroscience, robotics, biomedical research, and a host of other disciplines. The cluster resides in the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC), a modern datacenter in western Massachusetts shared by Boston-area universities.

From Pilot to Powerhouse: The Evolution

The cluster's growth has been rapid and strategic. It opened with an initial pilot installation of 144 A100-40GB GPUs in spring 2023. In fall 2023, it added 384 H100-80GB GPUs, making it one of the world's largest academic computing clusters at the time. In March 2026, the Kempner announced a major expansion, more than doubling the cluster's size with the addition of 424 H200 GPUs and 192 RTX PRO 6000 GPUs.

The timing was strategic. The institute bought computing power before demand for AI hardware surged—giving Harvard researchers a resource many academic labs still struggle to secure. As Executive Director Elise Porter noted: "There are very few academic institutions on the planet that offer this scale of compute to a research community of our size" . The expansion allows Kempner researchers to undertake large-scale and small-scale projects simultaneously—a flexibility most institutions lack. "Most institutions would have to stop all other work for months to run a large-scale project," Porter explained. "We're not going to have to stop everyone so that one project can move forward" .

Green High-Performance Computing

The cluster's power is matched by its efficiency. In November 2024, the Kempner AI cluster was ranked 32nd on the Green500—the industry's premier ranking of the most energy-efficient supercomputers globally—and 85th on the TOP500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers.

As Max Shad, Kempner's Senior Director of AI/ML Research Engineering, put it: "It is no small feat to have built this kind of green high-performance computing power in such a short period of time, enabling cutting-edge research that is innovating in real time" .

As Porter wrote: "Generative AI is arguably one of the most important technological innovations of our generation, and these models are built on large clusters of highly networked super-fast processors" . The Kempner Institute ensures that the researchers asking the biggest questions about intelligence have the tools to find the answers—and that those answers serve the public good.
