The cognitive paradox: will AGI make us stupid?

From studies showing that students relying on AI tutors perform worse when the crutch is removed to warnings of "cognitive atrophy" from systematic intellectual underuse, a disturbing paradox is emerging: the very technology designed to augment human intelligence may be making us less intelligent. But this is not an inevitable destiny—it is a design choice.
The Digital Sedentary Lifestyle
The analogy is striking. Just as the Industrial Revolution replaced physical labour with machines, creating a sedentary lifestyle that demanded the invention of gyms, the cognitive revolution is replacing mental labour with AI. "Human beings have a strong tendency to save energy," notes CNRS researcher Johann Chevalere. "If there are activities you never do, the brain—which works by saving energy—won't go to the trouble of maintaining connections that aren't being used".
The evidence is accumulating. A study of 1,222 participants found that using AI to solve arithmetic or reading comprehension problems improved short-term performance but diminished long-term learning and persistence when the tools were unavailable. "These findings are particularly concerning because persistence is foundational to skill acquisition and is one of the strongest predictors of long-term learning," the authors wrote. The Cognitive Atrophy Framework
Researchers have formalised this phenomenon as "cognitive atrophy"—the gradual weakening of cognitive functions through systematic underuse. As one paper argues, excessive reliance on AI guidance progressively diminishes users' intellectual autonomy and problem-solving capabilities.
Delegating knowledge is not the same as delegating wisdom. "You learn by experience, and if you don't have any experiences... you will get cognitive atrophy," notes entrepreneur David Vivancos. When AI removes the "learning opportunities" that require cognitive effort, it short-circuits the very processes that build and maintain neural pathways.
The Gymnasium Solution
Just as the gym emerged to counteract physical atrophy, researchers are proposing "cognitive gyms" as a systematic response. A 2026 paper titled "Cognitive Gym: Reimagining Mental Fitness in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" argues that "structured environments for training attention, reflection, emotional intelligence, and moral reasoning" can preserve human cognitive function.
Former OpenAI researcher Andrej Karpathy envisions a similar shift. Comparing education to physical exercise, he argues that pre-AGI education is necessary for economic survival, but post-AGI education will be something we pursue because it's "fun" and "personally rewarding"—a "mental gym" for intellectual fitness. This reframes the challenge: not eliminating cognitive effort, but making it intrinsically valuable.
The Design Choice
The outcome is not predetermined. A 2025 IEEE paper warns that AI can be designed either as a "cognitive crutch" or as an "epistemic partner". Studies show that when AI acts as a tutor—probing knowledge and filling gaps in understanding rather than providing answers—students develop skills without cognitive decay. The difference is in the form of offloading: complete delegation erodes skill; interactive collaboration preserves it.
A Shared Horizon
