AGI and the future of ocean exploration

From AI models that process a decade of footage in days to AGI architectures designed to inhabit the abyss permanently, the convergence of artificial general intelligence and ocean exploration is transforming the deep sea from an inaccessible frontier into an intelligible ecosystem—but only if we can ensure that the sentinels we deploy serve the ocean's preservation, not its exploitation.

Artificial intelligence offers a transformative solution. In research published in 2022, scientists demonstrated that AI could be trained to successfully analyse over 58,000 deep-sea images in under ten days—a task that would have taken a human analyst many months. The Bezos Earth Fund's Deep Vision project, launched in 2026, is applying this approach across the entire Atlantic basin, using AI to produce the first comprehensive maps of vulnerable marine ecosystems.
From Detection to Cognition: The AGI Frontier
Narrow AI excels at detection and classification. AGI offers something more: the capacity to reason, adapt, and inhabit. The Leviathan architecture, proposed in 2025, envisions a fully autonomous AGI designed for long-term inhabitation of the deep sea, shifting the paradigm from remote-controlled tools to intelligent, embodied agents.
The architecture is built on three core pillars: decentralised, bio-inspired cognition based on the CorTexManus framework; intrinsic resilience through modular swarm intelligence; and a foundational ethical governance model ensuring all operations are subservient to non-disruption. The system comprises a high-cognition Leviathan unit and a swarm of specialised Minnow units, enabling persistent, adaptive exploration without the constant need for human oversight.
China's DePTH-GPT model, developed as part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science, demonstrates how multimodal AI can integrate video footage, topographical maps, hydrodynamic simulations, sediment samples, and bioacoustic data to create intelligent cognitive systems for deep-sea research. The model has already been deployed to study deep-sea seamounts and hydrothermal vents, environments critical to understanding marine biodiversity and geochemical cycles.
The Ethical Imperative: Conservation or Exploitation?
The power to explore carries the responsibility to protect. The Deep Vision project is explicit in its purpose: producing maps that help environmental managers make science-informed decisions about where marine protected areas should be located. These maps are vital for implementing the new High Seas Treaty, ensuring that the expansion of economic activities—fishing, mining, resource extraction—takes vulnerable ecosystems into account.
Yet the same AGI capabilities that enable conservation could also enable exploitation. The development of AGI architectures for deep-sea exploration must be accompanied by robust ethical governance. As the Leviathan framework proposes, all operations must be subservient to the principle of non-disruption. This means designing AGI systems that cannot be repurposed for extractive activities, embedding ecological preservation into their fundamental architecture.
The GFN Context: Stewardship at Scale
For Global Future Nexus, AGI-driven ocean exploration is central to the mission of planetary sustainability.
