AGI and human-level intelligence

At London's Queen Elizabeth Prize roundtable in November 2025, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made a declaration that crystallised a shift in the industry: "We are already using AGI-level intelligence for practical work today".

The Declaration Heard Round the World

On November 7, 2025, six of the most influential figures in artificial intelligence gathered in London for a roundtable discussion following the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering awards ceremony. The participants read like a hall of fame: Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, and Yann LeCun—the three "godfathers" of deep learning—alongside Fei-Fei Li (ImageNet creator and spatial intelligence pioneer), Bill Dally (NVIDIA's chief GPU architect), and Jensen Huang (NVIDIA's CEO).

The core question was deceptively simple: Has AGI really arrived? No one provided a standard definition or declared the technology complete. Yet across 30 minutes of dialogue, the six pioneers transmitted a unified signal from their respective perspectives: AGI is no longer a distant goal but a reality seeping into organisations, processes, and positions.

Huang was characteristically direct. He dismissed the debate over when AGI would arrive, arguing that the question itself had become academic. "We have enough general intelligence to transform the technology into a large number of socially useful applications in the next few years," he declared. "We are doing this today".

A Spectrum of Views

The other five participants offered complementary perspectives, revealing a spectrum of agreement and nuance:

Geoffrey Hinton predicted that within 20 years, machines will defeat everyone in a debate . Fei-Fei Li observed that in some fields, machines have already surpassed humans, though she cautioned that the direction of their evolution may not be anthropomorphic . Yoshua Bengio suggested that within five years, AI would be capable of everything an average employee does . Bill Dally highlighted that NVIDIA's GPUs are not just faster but smarter, powering a fundamental shift in computing.

Yann LeCun offered the most pointed dissent, cautioning that current large language models do not equate to true intelligence. "We don't even have a machine as smart as a cat," he said, arguing that a few fundamental scientific breakthroughs are still needed to reach true general intelligence.

Yet even LeCun did not dismiss the broader trajectory. The disagreements were real, but the underlying consensus was unmistakable: the AGI era has begun.

Human-Level Intelligence Is Already Here

Huang's declaration was not a prediction—it was a real-time progress report. At the core of his argument is the conviction that intelligence compounds: each new intelligent system creates more possibilities, not fewer. Inside NVIDIA, every engineer, chip designer, and software developer now works with AI models as copilots—"100% coverage with AI" . Instead of reducing headcount, this integration has expanded it. The company is hiring more people because augmented productivity opens the door to pursuing more ideas.

This is not about outsourcing thinking. Huang argues that good AI use demands more mental effort, not less. He treats AI like a conversation—asking smart questions, comparing answers, sharpening his thinking.

Moving from AGI to Physical AI

Huang has already moved past the AGI conversation to what he calls Physical AI—an emerging field where AI moves beyond digital tasks to interact with the physical world. At GTC 2025, he introduced NVIDIA Cosmos, a world foundation model capable of simulating real-world physics to develop robots and autonomous vehicles.

"The ChatGPT moment for general robotics is just around the corner," Huang said, predicting that the next several years will bring major breakthroughs in robotics. NVIDIA is already working on three robotic frontiers: agentic AI, humanoid robots, and self-driving cars.

Huang's declaration that human-level AI is already here is not hype—it is a reflection of the lived reality inside the world's leading AI infrastructure company.
