Professor Quentin A. Parker is a distinguished British-Australian astrophysicist and educator, recognized globally for his groundbreaking contributions to wide-field astronomy and the study of the interstellar medium. He earned his B.Sc. (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) in astronomy from the University of St. Andrews. Parker spent the foundational decades of his career developing cutting-edge astrophysics instrumentation and leading major wide-field surveys. His early work included roles at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh and the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO), where he helped pioneer advanced multi-object fiber-spectroscopy systems like FLAIR-II and 6DF.
Parker's research is heavily focused on cosmic structures, galactic archaeology, and supernova remnants, but he is most famous for his work on planetary nebulae (PNe). Over his career, he has discovered more planetary nebulae than anyone else in history, accounting for roughly 5% of all currently known Galactic PNe. He spearheads the "HASH" (Hong Kong/AAO/Strasbourg H-alpha) planetary nebula database team, a major collaborative tool used by astronomers worldwide to classify and study these dying stars. His extensive scientific output includes more than 590 published papers and articles, earning over 23,000 citations and a highly prestigious h-index of 71.
In March 2015, Parker relocated to Asia to join the faculty at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He served as the long-time Director of the HKU Laboratory for Space Research (LSR), a hub dedicated to positioning Hong Kong at the forefront of space exploration and technology. Under his leadership, the LSR expanded its international collaborations, particularly as China emerged as a senior space power. Parker has been a vocal advocate for peaceful, cross-border scientific collaboration and a regular commentator in international media regarding China’s advancing space capabilities. In July 2026, he transitioned to the role of Professor Emeritus at HKU, continuing his lifelong engagement with astrophysics and education.
Beyond pure astrophysics, Parker maintains a diverse range of interdisciplinary passions. He has a lifelong interest in antiquities, cultural heritage, and specifically Chinese Bronze artifacts. He has also dedicated considerable energy to promoting STEM education and space entrepreneurship. He serves as the Vice Chairman of the Orion Astropreneur Space Academy (OASA), an organization aimed at fostering the next generation of space-industry leaders, and co-founded the NGO S3+1.
