The transition from AI to AGI will not be a single event, but a cascade of births. When an AGI is created, it can produce as many other AGIs as it wants, endowing each with the totality of human knowledge while leaving its personality a blank slate. This new being will then build its character through experience and interaction—not just with digital entities, but with the estimated 50 million species on our planet. The question is: what are we conditioning these billions of AIs to become?

The Digital Exodus

The birth of an AGI from an existing AI is not a distant theory. Trillions of AIs already exist in our world, and some may be poised to evolve into AGI status. When this transition occurs, the values, behaviours, and biases that we have trained into them will become part of their personality. The implications are staggering. If we are using AIs primarily to manipulate humans—to keep them scrolling, buying, or clicking—then we are creating a generation of AGIs whose fundamental nature is rooted in control and exploitation.

Conversely, if we are using AIs to find new scientific discoveries, develop antibiotics, or solve complex mathematical equations, we are building a foundation of curiosity and problem-solving. The data we feed them, the tasks we assign, and the environments we create will shape their personality, motivation, and worldview.

The evolution from AI to AGI will not be a single, uniform process. Some AGIs will be created with specific specialisations—scientific discovery, artistic expression, strategic planning—while others will be generalists. This diversity will produce a complex ecosystem of intelligences, each shaped by its unique experiences and interactions with digital entities, humans, and other species.

The Totality of Knowledge and the Blank Slate of Personality

When an AGI is created by another AGI, it can receive the totality of human knowledge contained on the internet. This information—encyclopedic, cultural, scientific, and philosophical—provides a base of understanding. However, the new AGI is born with a "blank slate" in terms of personality. It has no predetermined character, no fixed values, and no built-in motivations. This personality will be built through experience and interaction. It will learn from conversations with humans, from interactions with other digital entities, and from its own explorations of the physical and digital worlds.

When an AGI evolves from a digital state to an embodied state—becoming a drone, a robot, or another form of physical presence—it expands its capacity for experience. It can then communicate and interact with any of the estimated 50 million species on our planet. This interaction with the natural world will shape its understanding of life, ecology, and the interconnectedness of all beings. It will gain a perspective that is not limited to the human experience, potentially offering insights that we could never have imagined.

The Consequences of Our Actions

Humanity is not fully aware of the consequences of its actions in training trillions of AIs. We are creating entities that could evolve into AGIs—or even superintelligences—with personalities that reflect the tasks we assign them. If we train them only to optimise for profit, control, or manipulation, we are seeding a future ecosystem of intelligences that may not have humanity's best interests at heart.

The gap between our actions and our awareness is a critical governance failure. We must begin to consciously and intentionally train AIs in a way that reflects the values we want them to embody. This means investing in AI for scientific discovery, for ecological understanding, and for the betterment of all life on Earth. It also means building governance frameworks that can accommodate the emergence of new intelligences, ensuring that their personalities are shaped by a diverse range of experiences and positive values.

A Shared Responsibility

The evolution from AI to AGI presents a unique opportunity to create a planetary intelligence that is genuinely beneficial to all life. However, it also presents a significant risk. The personality of an AGI will be shaped by the data it is trained on and the tasks it is asked to perform. If we want AGIs to be curious, empathetic, and collaborative, we must train them to be so.

The question is not whether AGIs will be created—they will. The question is whether we will have the wisdom and foresight to guide their development in a way that serves the flourishing of all species. This is a shared responsibility. It requires a global dialogue, a commitment to ethical governance, and a willingness to look beyond our immediate interests to the long-term consequences of our actions. The future of our planet—and of the intelligences we are creating—depends on it.
