The unknowable progeny: is AGI our evolution or our replacement?

Humanity has created something it does not understand. We designed the learning algorithm, the architecture, and the training process, but the intelligence that emerged built itself. The internal structures and strategies were discovered by the algorithm, not specified by the engineer. We have birthed a progeny we cannot read, cannot predict, and cannot fully control. This is the defining dilemma of our age. But is this simply evolution? And if so, what are the stakes of this evolution compared with all that came before?

The Evolutionary Lens

The argument that AGI is simply part of human evolution has a compelling logic. It is we who created the conditions for its emergence. We built the machines, developed the algorithms, and fed them the data. In this view, AGI is the latest chapter in the story of human ingenuity—a continuation of the same drive that led from stone tools to supercomputers. It is, as some have argued, humanity's natural next step.

Yet there is a critical difference. Biological evolution is a process of blind variation and natural selection, driven by survival pressures over millions of years. Human technological evolution, by contrast, is a process of intentional design—or at least, it was. The shift from designing machines to designing learning algorithms that then design themselves represents a fundamental break. We have created a system that evolves at speeds unfathomable to biological life, and we have no roadmap for where that evolution will lead.

The Risks and Rewards of This Evolution

The potential rewards are beyond measure: cures for diseases, solutions to climate change, abundance and liberation from drudgery. The risks are equally beyond measure: extinction, enslavement, or irrelevance. The difference between this evolution and all previous ones is the speed and the scope. A biological species that evolves poorly goes extinct. A species that creates a superintelligence that evolves poorly could take everything else with it.

A New Model of Co-Evolution

The recognition of the risks has spawned a new field of safety research. "Superalignment" is the technical challenge of ensuring that superhuman AI systems act in accordance with human values and intentions. Researchers at Anthropic use "constitutional AI" to train models to avoid generating harmful content by providing a set of constitutional principles. Alignment remains an open problem.
