The role of AGI in archaeological discovery

From AI models that breathe life into fragmented pottery to algorithms that predict climate risk for buried ruins, artificial intelligence is transforming archaeology from a slow, manual discipline into a data-driven, forward-looking science. Yet experts are clear: the machine provides the data; human interpretation is what turns it into history.
From Fragment to Insight
The integration of AI into archaeology is not just about speed—it is about enabling entirely new forms of discovery. Traditional methods are slow, labour-intensive, and often struggle with the fragmentary nature of archaeological data. As ChatGPT itself acknowledges: "AI thrives on scale. Archaeology deals in fragments".
But where human archaeologists see fragments, AI sees patterns. At the Baodun City Ruins in Sichuan, an interdisciplinary team has built a digital pottery database where AI models successfully date highly fragmented pottery shards from the Baodun culture period (4500 to 3900 years ago) using pieces that contain very limited information. As researcher Wan Jiao explained, AI has shown "tremendous potential in handling the complex challenges of pottery shard classification".
AI is also helping to piece together the past in more literal ways. At the Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a 1,500-year-old Buddha had collapsed during the Northern Wei Dynasty, leaving no historical records of its original appearance. Using 3D laser scanning and more than 10 algorithmic models, the digitization team virtually reconstructed more than 100 fragments and restored the missing Buddha head and body drapery patterns—producing what experts believe is the most accurate restoration possible.
The Predictive Frontier
At Vindolanda Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall, a first-of-its-kind pilot project is using AI to protect undiscovered archaeology from climate change. Only about 25% of the site has been excavated, and at the current pace, it may take more than 150 years to uncover the rest. Rapid swings between drought and saturation are destabilising the fragile conditions that have preserved Vindolanda's archaeology for nearly two millennia.
The solution is a digital twin of the fort that fuses on-site environmental data with climate projections, running thousands of "what if" simulations to generate predictive risk maps. As Dr Andrew Birley, CEO of the Vindolanda Trust, put it: "Harnessing the power of AI... give us a fighting chance of saving some of our most vulnerable archaeological deposits". This is not just reactive conservation—it is proactive, time-sensitive intervention guided by foresight rather than crisis.
Challenges and the Human Element
Despite its promise, AI in archaeology faces significant hurdles. Most archaeological datasets are incomplete, inconsistent, or recorded in incompatible formats. As one study noted, "AI models need large, clean, labeled data sets, which archaeology rarely has". Generative AI can hallucinate, producing fluent but inaccurate interpretations.
Yet the value of AI is not in replacing the archaeologist but in augmenting their capacity. In Uzbekistan, researchers demonstrated that ChatGPT-4o, guided by well-formulated natural language prompts, processed magnetometer data to reveal subsurface archaeological features comparable to specialised geophysical software—lowering the barrier to entry for data processing. In China, an LLM-based framework achieved localisation accuracy for archaeological sites within one kilometre, with the best accuracy reaching approximately 10 metres.
