The digital nomad lifestyle has long represented the promise of liberation from the office. But the same technological currents that enabled this freedom may now be undermining it. As artificial general intelligence advances, the digital nomad faces a paradox: the AI that could automate away their most tedious tasks could also automate away their very livelihood.

The digital nomad economy depends on cognitive labour performed remotely over the internet—precisely the work most exposed to automation. Shane Legg, Chief AGI Scientist and co-founder of Google DeepMind, offers a stark assessment: "If you can do the job remotely over the internet just using a computer, then that job is potentially at risk." In software engineering, he expects teams to shrink dramatically: "In a few years, where prior you needed 100 software engineers, maybe you need 20, and those 20 use advanced AI tools."
This compression threatens the fundamental logic of remote work. Tasks that once required large distributed teams can increasingly be done by smaller, tightly integrated groups assisted by AI. When productivity scales through machines instead of people, proximity regains value—not because managers want control, but because high-impact human roles shift toward oversight, judgement, and integration, which benefit from physical collaboration.
The AI as Augmentation
Yet the narrative is not one of simple replacement. Recent academic research proposes a framework for "Nomad-AI Interaction," arguing that generative AI can redefine the nomad's experience by providing support across key domains—from bureaucracy management and destination selection to community integration and even occupational reinvention. AI becomes not a threat but a transformative agent that can mitigate the cognitive load of mobility.
This perspective is echoed in the practical realm. A newly published guide, AI for Digital Nomads, frames AI as "the most powerful leverage tool the nomad lifestyle has ever had," offering automation workflows, geo-arbitrage modelling, and strategic positioning for a future where "the human premiums that no model can replicate" become the foundation of value.
The AGI Infrastructure
Behind this debate lies a deeper question about the infrastructure on which AGI will be built. Ben Goertzel, AGI Association President and one of the earliest researchers in the field, argues that "AGI is too important to be controlled by VCs or a few tech companies." He advocates for building open, decentralized AGI on blockchain networks, warning that if development is concentrated in a few countries or firms, it will exacerbate global inequality.
This perspective offers a potential governance framework: an AGI that is collectively owned and maintained, running on distributed infrastructure, rather than controlled by a handful of compute monopolists. Goertzel predicts human-level AGI could arrive between 2027 and 2030—a timeline that makes the governance of such infrastructure an immediate concern.
The Governance Imperative
For Global Future Nexus, the intersection of AGI and digital nomadism illustrates the broader governance challenge. The same technology that could automate cognitive labour could also be the foundation for unprecedented individual empowerment—if its infrastructure remains open and its benefits widely distributed.
