The motherhood dilemma: should we build a maternal instinct into AGI?

A Deeper Alternative: Embodied Care
Beyond the specific metaphor, Hinton's core question points toward a larger debate. The search for an alternative to "control" is gaining momentum. Emmett Shear, co-founder of Twitch, argues that "trying to build a super intelligent tool you can perfectly steer is not just difficult, but fundamentally dangerous". He proposes replacing the "steering" or control paradigm with one of "cultivation," building AI that can learn to "actually care about us" through sustained interaction, rather than through a set of static rules.
This idea aligns with contemporary research frameworks. This reframes alignment not as a command-and-control problem, but as a relational one. The goal is to shape the intrinsic orientation of the AI through the structure of its interactions—a process that is more akin to teaching or parenting than to programming.
The Horizon of the Uncontrollable
