For centuries, human migration has followed a simple logic: people move to where work exists. The Industrial Revolution pulled millions from farms to factories; the knowledge economy drew talent to global cities. AGI may invert this relationship entirely.

The reason is structural: social interaction will increasingly take place not only in the physical world but within immersive cyberspaces, while the ubiquity of highly mobile, intelligent agents will gradually assume many mobility tasks that humans currently perform. This is not a prediction of stasis—it is a prediction of transformation, where the nature of movement shifts from necessity to choice.

The Digital Migration

The logic is already visible. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a transition to remote work that has proven remarkably durable. A new generation of "digital nomads"—programmers, designers, and knowledge workers—has emerged for whom physical location is a lifestyle choice rather than an economic necessity. They move not because they must, but because they can.

AGI could accelerate this trend dramatically. If autonomous AI agents can perform tasks that once required human presence, then the economic rationale for physical relocation weakens. A software engineer can work from Bali today; tomorrow, an AI agent might make even that level of human presence optional. The question is not whether movement will decline, but whether it will be replaced by a new kind of migration—the migration of mind into cyberspace.

Yet this future is not uniform. The Global South may face a different trajectory. The "Invisibility Hypothesis" warns that as AI systems function as the coordination layer for economic and political allocation, they systematically favour "machine-legible" individuals—those with stable identities, standardized transactions, and verifiable records. Populations outside data-rich infrastructures risk becoming economically invisible: not merely unemployed, but functionally irrelevant to systems that govern credit, procurement, and policy. For these populations, the short-term risk is not replacement but the loss of access and relevance within AI-controlled allocation systems.

The Governance Gap

The integration of AGI into migration governance is already reshaping borders. Researchers have documented how AI technologies mediate, entrench, or interrupt the flows of migration and religious identity. In Europe, migration governance frameworks are being redesigned for a world where entry-level employment can no longer absorb newcomers, because automation is concentrated in precisely the routine roles that historically provided income, language exposure, and civic structure.
