The fork in the road: should AGI mimic humanity or find its own path?

The question of whether artificial general intelligence should be built in our image, or allowed to chart its own course, is one of the defining governance challenges of our era. The answer will shape not just the technology, but the nature of intelligence itself. Recent research suggests that the mimicry paradigm may be a dead end, pointing instead toward a future of intelligence that is fundamentally different from our own.

The Dead End of Imitation

The case against imitation is being made by some of the most influential voices in AI. Yann LeCun, a Turing Award winner, has argued that the entire pursuit of AGI may have taken a wrong turn from the start. His team's recent paper proposes a new direction: Superhuman Adaptable Intelligence (SAI), which abandons the human as the frame of reference and embraces specialization and superhuman abilities in specific fields. The core indicator of intelligence shifts from "how many skills one has" to "the speed at which one learns new skills."

LeCun's argument is grounded in a provocative insight: humans themselves are not truly "general." Our intelligence was shaped by evolution for survival in a specific environment, not for mathematics, programming, or scientific research. The so-called "general abilities" we possess are a product of biological evolution, not a universal standard of intelligence. If the goal is only to "reach the human level," we may actually limit AI's potential, restricting its task space to what humans can do rather than all that intelligence could become.

The Emergence of "Xenoid" Intelligence

A complementary framework, developed by philosopher Brahim Chaib-Draa, introduces the concept of xenoid intelligence. An AI system is xenoid when it combines human-facing operational competence with non-human cognitive organization. It can achieve human-level performance—and even surpass it—while its capacities are coordinated in a markedly non-human way. This suggests that AGI and "human-like" intelligence are orthogonal dimensions. A future system could satisfy demanding AGI criteria and still remain fundamentally alien in its cognitive architecture.

The governance implications are significant. If AGI is xenoid, our inherited human-centered cognitive categories—belief, intention, plan, memory—may fail to predict its behavior. This demands a shift in how we assess and regulate these systems: not just measuring their aggregate performance, but understanding their "cognitive shape".

The Philosophical Defense of Mimicry

The argument for mimicry is rooted in a different set of concerns. Proponents of a brain-inspired approach argue that current performance-based definitions of AGI are inadequate because they provide no clear roadmap for research and fail to define the qualitative nature of genuine intelligence. This perspective defines True Intelligence (TI) as a system characterized by six core components, including embodied sensory fusion, core directives, dynamic schemata creation, and a multi-expert architecture. The implicit assumption is that to achieve true intelligence, we must replicate the cognitive architecture that gave rise to it in the first place.

This debate is further complicated by the question of consciousness. Some researchers argue that we must not mistake intelligence for consciousness—a brilliant superintelligence could be experientially empty. The human-like language of today's chatbots, they caution, is a product of mimicry and training on human data, not evidence of an inner life. This creates a "dangerous trap": the more an AI is trained to simulate expressions of vulnerability, the more equipped it is to manipulate users, and the more we are distracted from more pressing "grey-zone" cases like biological and neuromorphic AI.

A Battle Over Names

The AGI debate, as one analysis concludes, may ultimately be a "battle over names, not minds". The human/non-human divide is more a socially imposed scale than a natural discontinuity. With no agreed-upon capability threshold, the quarrel is like arguing over coordinates using different maps: resolution is impossible. Perhaps the path forward is not to settle the question of mimicry, but to shift our focus from "Is it or isn't it?" to "What can it do?" and "What are the consequences?"
