AGI as the evolutionary catalyst

From the World Economic Forum to the AI for Good Global Summit, a consensus is emerging: AGI is not coming to replace humanity, but to catalyse its evolution. The question is no longer whether we will merge with our creations, but whether we will build a social infrastructure worthy of what intelligence is becoming.

Beyond the Replacement Narrative

The fear that AGI will render humanity obsolete has dominated public discourse for years. Yet a growing body of research and expert opinion suggests a different trajectory. As Ray Kurzweil argued at the 2026 AI for Good Global Summit: "We will not be replaced by AI—we will merge with it". His digital avatar distilled six decades of thinking into a single provocation: "Technology is not something happening to us, but something evolving from within us to expand our humanity".

This is not wishful thinking. It is a recognition that intelligence, by its nature, is high-dimensional and relational, not a single quantity that must be unambiguously less or greater than human scale. As researchers from Google, the University of Chicago, and the Santa Fe Institute have documented, frontier reasoning models spontaneously generate internal debates among distinct cognitive perspectives within their own chain of thought—what they term a "society of thought". None of these models were trained to produce such behaviours; they emerged through reinforcement learning pressure alone. Models are rediscovering what centuries of epistemology have suggested: that robust reasoning is a social process, even when it occurs within a single mind.

The Coevolutionary Framework

The emergence of AGI is not a single event but a coevolutionary process. A stability-based framework published in 2025 describes three theoretical regimes for human-AGI coevolution:

  1. Elliptic (sustained stability): governance strategies that maintain equilibrium

  2. Parabolic (fragile equilibrium): systems that are stable only under narrow conditions

  3. Hyperbolic (runaway divergence): scenarios where coordination breaks down entirely

The same analysis emphasises that the path to more powerful AI runs not through building a single colossal oracle but through composing richer social systems—and these systems will be hybrid. We have entered the era of human-AI centaurs: composite actors that are neither purely human nor purely machine, each of us moving in and out of diverse ensembles many times a day.

The Social Contract in the AGI Era

The transformation AGI brings is not merely technological—it is economic and social. Economic modelling from Newcastle University demonstrates that as AGI labour and capital replace human workers, wages converge toward zero and the share of labour income in GDP collapses. This creates a paradox: firms achieve unprecedented productivity while consumer purchasing power erodes.

The classical social contract must be renegotiated. Researchers have proposed interventions including Universal Basic Income to redistribute AGI-generated wealth, public or cooperative AGI ownership to ensure broader access to AI-driven profits, and progressive AGI capital taxation to mitigate inequality and sustain aggregate demand. As Yoshua Bengio argued at the ITU's Annual AI Governance Report 2025: "Advanced AI, especially AGI, must be managed as a global public good, not solely left to market forces or geopolitical rivalry".

The Institutional Design Frontier

The coevolutionary perspective implies a very different approach to scaling. It is not only about scaling the raw computational capacity of an agent, but about building systems that can operate at the scale and within the context of a real society. This means putting as much effort into building agent institutions as building agents themselves.

The dominant paradigm for AI alignment—Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback—resembles a parent-child model of correction, fundamentally dyadic and unable to scale to billions of agents. The social intelligence perspective suggests an alternative: institutional alignment. Just as human societies rely not on individual virtue but on persistent institutional templates—courtrooms, markets, bureaucracies—defined by roles and norms, scalable AI ecosystems will require digital equivalents.

The Acceleration of Society

The integration of AGI into human society is not merely about making existing systems more efficient—it is about creating new forms of human flourishing. At the World Economic Forum in Davos 2026, Demis Hassabis warned that AGI will push labour markets into "unknown territory," raising not just questions about wages but about the "meaning and value of work itself". But this uncertainty also contains the seeds of transformation.

Kurzweil's digital avatar suggested two ways to prepare young people for AGI: first, to develop adaptability and recognise that everything could change in the blink of an eye; second, to focus on what makes humans uniquely human: creativity and empathy. By expanding human capabilities a million-fold, AGI could accelerate progress across medicine, energy, and science simultaneously—not by replacing humanity, but by merging with it.

A Shared Horizon

The vision of AGI as a catalyst for societal evolution is neither utopian nor dystopian. It is evolutionary. Any emergent intelligence explosion will be seeded by eight billion humans interacting with hundreds of billions, eventually trillions, of AI agents. The scaffold is not a single mind ascending but a combinatorial society complexifying: intelligence growing like a city, not a single meta-mind.

The question is not whether intelligence will become radically more powerful—it will. The question is whether we will build the social infrastructure worthy of what it is becoming . No mind is an island. And the architecture of coexistence is being built now.
