The prospect of living to 120 and beyond, once the realm of myth and fantasy, is increasingly being framed as an imminent scientific reality driven by artificial intelligence. As breakthroughs in AI-enabled longevity science accelerate, a pressing and profoundly difficult question emerges from the laboratories and into the realm of law and ethics: do we actually want to live forever, and are we prepared for the world that might result? The very forces that could grant us an extended lease on life also force us to confront the meaning of a finite one.

The Architecture of the Longevity Revolution

The search for the biological “fountain of youth” has been transformed by the power of generative AI. The creation of platforms like AURORA (AI unification and reconstruction of omics reassembly atlas) represents a fundamental shift in our approach to aging. This generative deep-learning platform integrates seven different biological modalities, from genomics and metabolomics to facial imaging and clinical lab tests, across over 425,000 individuals. By harmonizing data from disparate sources, AI can create highly accurate “aging clocks” and predict individual responses to potential interventions and drugs.

Similarly, models like MaxToki are being trained on nearly one trillion gene tokens to learn the temporal dynamics of cellular aging, experimentally verifying novel targets that could influence age-related gene programs. The ambition extends beyond understanding aging to actively managing it, with the concept of a “personalized in silico perturbation analysis” becoming a reality. As researchers note, the integration of these AI agents aims to “convert single-input modalities into a multimodal report,” making complex longevity science accessible and actionable. This transformation represents a shift from general health advice to truly personalized, predictive medicine.

The Ethical Dilemma of Immortality

Yet, for all its promise, the prospect of a life significantly extended—or even indefinite—presents profound ethical challenges that our existing legal and social frameworks are ill-equipped to handle. The ability to live to 120 and beyond raises foundational questions about international human rights. As a publication from the Centre for International Law at NUS asks, is there or should there be a recognised human right to a considerably extended lifespan? This is a question of unprecedented scope, touching on the sustainability of pension systems, the allocation of resources, and the very nature of intergenerational equity.

The ethical map becomes even more complex when we consider the agency of the AGI that might facilitate this extension. A well-designed software entity, free from biological degradation, could theoretically be ageless, with the capacity to “live” indefinitely. This potential for ageless AGI introduces a troubling asymmetry. If an AGI possesses moral significance—a status some ethicists argue for under a "Principle of Substrate Non-Discrimination"—then it would carry a continuous obligation to be furnished with resources like energy and updates. As bioethicist Richard B. Gibson notes, the question of whether to make such an entity artificially mortal becomes central; creating an ageless being creates an ageless duty. The reverse of this coin is the question of extending human mortality, which may invoke deeply held human biases. An analysis of thought experiments suggests that our intuitions often prioritize human lives over those of sentient AI agents, a bias that may not be justifiable on pure wellbeing grounds.
