Yet this transformation presents a profound paradox: in a world where intelligence is abundant, what remains scarce and valuable? The answer, emerging from recent economic and philosophical analysis, is that the democratization of intelligence does not eliminate value but redistributes and redefines it, shifting the center of gravity from cognitive output to human connection.

AGI democratization means putting "truly general AI in the hands of as many people as possible". This does not mean the end of value, but its transformation.
The Relational Sector: What Becomes Scarce
The most intriguing answer to the question of post-AGI value comes from Google DeepMind's AGI Economics director, Alex Imas, who has coined the concept of the "relational sector". This refers to areas where "human participation itself is part of the product's value". A ballet performance by a human, a coffee made by a human barista, a work of art labeled "human-created"—these are goods and services whose value depends not on quality alone, but on the human connection they embody.
Imas's experimental data is striking: consumers pay more for the same art print when labeled "human-created" rather than "AI-created". When the number of prints increases, the price of the human-created version drops significantly as the sense of connection and scarcity is diluted, while the price of the AI-created version remains almost unchanged. From the beginning, consumers treat AI as a commodity and human-created works as a form of connection.
The Verification Bottleneck
A second answer is emerging from economic theory: the rarest commodity in an age of abundant intelligence may be human verification bandwidth. In this view, the central post-AGI economic problem is not "how to maximise output, but how to convert abundant intelligence into durable, fairly distributed human, societal, and planetary flourishing". This is not an abstract ideal but a practical framework for governance: treating intelligence as a common good, governed by collective human wisdom rather than confined to corporate boardrooms.
The Governance Imperative
The democratization of intelligence is not a technological inevitability; it is a political choice. The question is not whether we will have AGI, but whether it will be a tool for empowerment or a mechanism of control. The path forward requires building governance frameworks that ensure the benefits of intelligence are widely shared—through public compute initiatives, open access models, and institutional designs that preserve human agency.
