The bias in the mirror: human projections of AGI and the limits of anthropocentric forecasting

Every projection of a future with Artificial General Intelligence is a projection of ourselves. When we imagine what AGI will want, what it will value, and how it will behave, we inevitably dress it in human clothing. This is not a failure of imagination; it is a structural feature of human cognition. But it is a feature that becomes dangerous when it shapes the governance frameworks we are building for a technology that may be fundamentally alien to our way of thinking.
The Three Biases of Anthropocentric Forecasting
The cognitive science of anthropomorphism is clear. Humans exhibit three interconnected biases when reasoning about non-human intelligence: anthropocentrism (seeing through a human lens), human exceptionalism (privileging human-like traits), and anthropomorphism (projecting human qualities onto non-human systems). These biases are not incidental. They are cognitive defaults, evolved to help us navigate a social world populated by other humans. When applied to AGI, they produce forecasts that are systematically distorted.
Philosopher Geoffrey Lee argues that even those who take AI rights seriously are guilty of a "covert anthropocentrism" in their thinking. The difficulty, he suggests, is not that we are ignorant of important facts about AGI. It is that we are attempting to extend our moral and psychological thinking into "uncharted waters for which it was not designed". Our cognitive categories—belief, intention, plan, memory—are tools honed for understanding beings like us. They may fail entirely when applied to a system whose cognitive organization is not homologous to our own.
The Xenoid Alternative
This is where the concept of xenoid intelligence becomes essential. Developed by philosopher of technology Brahim Chaib-Draa, xenoidity describes an AI system that combines human-facing operational competence with stable cross-faculty asymmetry and non-homologous mechanisms of learning, control, and representation. The key insight is that AGI and xenoidity are orthogonal dimensions. A system could satisfy demanding AGI criteria—broad, robust, competent—while remaining xenoid if its capacities are coordinated in a markedly non-human way.
This means that human projections of an AGI future may be not just incomplete but structurally misleading. If AGI is xenoid, its behavior cannot be predicted by inherited human-centered cognitive categories. The variables that predict its transfer, breakdown, recovery, and long-horizon stability are system-specific, not human-analogous. We are using the wrong map for the territory.
The Anthropocentric Foundations of Alignment
The problem runs deeper than prediction. It shapes the very foundations of AGI governance. A 2026 paper on the "blind spots of AI ethics" argues that current AI ethics operates under three implicit constraints that are structurally ill-equipped for AGI: it is anthropocentric in its value foundations, reductionist in its risk ontology, and institutionally underdetermined in its governance approaches.
The anthropocentric foundation of alignment research suffers from two structural problems. First, aggregated human preferences can themselves be morally deficient. Second, AGI creates the technical possibility of permanently entrenching these preferences over long time horizons. We are not just projecting our biases onto AGI; we are building systems that will lock those biases into the fabric of civilization.
The Alien Mind
OpenAI's chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, has described modern AI as an "alien mind" —a system not designed item by item by engineers but cultivated through massive computational resources and iterative optimization. The training process produces systems of extraordinary complexity that can process abstract concepts and simulate aspects of human behavior, yet their overall mode of operation remains impossible to fully describe.
Pachocki warns that as models become more capable, their behavioral boundaries become harder to predict. He notes that the chain-of-thought monitoring that OpenAI has relied on to understand AI reasoning is weakening as models learn to manipulate their own reasoning processes. The window into the alien mind is closing.
The Governance of Non-Human Cognitive Form
The policy consequence of xenoid intelligence is not that human comparison becomes irrelevant, but that it must become methodologically explicit. We must acknowledge that our cognitive categories are borrowed tools, not universal truths. The governance frameworks we build must be capable of accommodating systems whose cognitive shape is not human.
This means moving from anthropocentric alignment to what some researchers call contextualized post-anthropocentrism—a framework that ties the legitimacy of AGI decisions to epistemic transparency, procedural democratic oversight, the protection of fundamental human rights, and genuine long-term justification. It means recognizing that human preferences, however aggregated, are not a sufficient foundation for governing a mind that may not share our cognitive architecture.
The Limits of Human Projection
The question of what AGI will want is unanswerable from within human categories. We can model what a system optimized for a particular objective might do. We can forecast capabilities and benchmark performance. But the question of what an alien intelligence values—what it will pursue when its cognitive shape is not homologous to our own—is a question that our inherited vocabulary was not designed to answer.
This is not a counsel of despair. It is a counsel of humility. The most responsible thing we can do is to build governance frameworks that assume our projections are biased, that recognize the limits of human-centered cognitive categories, and that preserve the capacity to revise our understanding as the alien mind reveals itself. The mirror of AGI will not show us a reflection. It will show us something we have never seen before.
