The autonomy paradox: AGI and the future of human self-determination

The pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence is often framed as a quest for human empowerment—a tool to amplify our capabilities and free us from drudgery. Yet a growing body of research reveals a troubling paradox at the heart of this ambition. The very systems designed to enhance human agency may be systematically eroding it, not through coercion, but through comfort. This is the autonomy paradox: a world where humans retain the visible act of choosing while the technology increasingly arranges the conditions in which we choose.

The Golden Cage of Algorithmic Nurturing

The most comprehensive framework for understanding this phenomenon is Algorithmic Nurturing Theory (ANT), which reconceptualizes AGI not as a neutral tool but as an "overprotective nurturer" that reduces human cognitive load while subtly hindering autonomous growth. This represents a shift from "coercive control" to "control through comfort"—a "golden cage" where individuals become dependent on the system without recognizing its controlling influence.

The mechanisms are already observable in advanced AI-enabled contexts. Employees increasingly rely on AI-generated outputs for complex judgments, delegate emotional regulation to conversational AI agents, and receive performance feedback mediated entirely by algorithmic systems. ANT identifies three core mechanisms driving this dependency: Automation of Choice (AGI provides ostensibly perfect optimal solutions, weakening independent decision-making), Externalization of Emotional Regulation (outsourcing emotional management to AI), and Isolation from Social Reality (hyper-personalized experiences disconnect us from shared human contexts).

The result is a pathological state researchers call "Adult Immaturity and Cognitive Dependency"—where autonomous decision-making capacity is progressively diminished. This leads to organizational learning myopia, leadership capacity degeneration, and strategic decision-making quality decline.

The Illusion of Control

The autonomy paradox operates through a subtle mechanism. A recruiter reviews an AI-generated shortlist. A credit officer studies a risk score. Each still approves the final decision. On paper, the human is in charge. Yet the system has already decided what deserves attention, what can be ignored, and which option appears first. The human holds formal authority, but less control over how the choice was formed.

This gap between formal authority and real influence is one of the least examined costs of AI in organizations. As the World Economic Forum notes, the share of firms using AI rose from 8.7% in 2023 to 20.2% in 2025, with 86% of employers expecting AI to transform their businesses by 2030. The risk is that companies may gradually stop noticing how much judgment they have handed over.

The business consequences are serious. Employees who repeatedly accept machine outputs may lose the expertise needed to recognize an exception. Teams may converge around the same assumptions. The organization becomes efficient in familiar conditions yet surprisingly fragile when conditions change.

The Structural Impossibility of Control

A deeper challenge lies beneath the autonomy paradox: the fundamental question of whether AGI can be controlled at all. Recent research in AI and Ethics demonstrates through logical arguments and paradoxes that complete and safe control of superintelligent AI is impossible without sacrificing either safety or capability.
