Japan is not an anomaly—it is a preview. At Toyota's model plants, production teams have been developing a "human-centered" automation approach that boosts productivity while freeing workers to focus on quality and continuous improvement. But the most profound applications are in daily living. A system can remind an elderly person that a meal has been heated in the microwave; if someone has a habit of walking every afternoon, AI can be aware of this in advance. In a sense, AI may be more compatible with the elderly than with the general public: even if someone repeatedly asks the same question, AI can answer as many times as needed. When scammers call, AI can advise: "Stay calm. Verify who is speaking".

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 studies found that conversational agents—particularly social robots—produced mild to moderate improvements in loneliness (effect size 0.35) and depression (effect size 0.46) in older adults. This is not merely about task completion; it is about psychological well-being.

Systems like the self-growing memory AI agent, integrated with a diary application, dynamically analyze user-written diaries and generate empathic, personalized responses. By drawing on both successful and challenging experiences, the system crafts responses that reinforce self-efficacy, fostering a sense of accomplishment and engagement. The system achieved a usability score of 77.3 out of 100, demonstrating that older adults can and do engage with these technologies.

The market is responding. The elder care robot market, valued at approximately $1.36 billion in 2024, is projected to reach $3.7 billion by 2032, growing at 13.8% annually. Companion robots dominate with 66% market share, while the fastest growth is occurring in Asia Pacific, with an 18.9% CAGR. Companies like SoftBank Robotics, Intuition Robotics, and UBTECH are leading a sector that now spans companion robots, mobility assistance, medication management, and telepresence.

The Global Divide and the GFN Context

The adoption of AGI in elderly care is not uniform. Japan and China lead in robotics adoption, driven by severe demographic aging and government support. The United States and Europe focus on smart home systems and AI assistants, with higher healthcare costs and greater demand for independent living.
