The prism of life: AGI, humanity, and our fellow species

The emergence of Artificial General Intelligence presents humanity with a mirror—and through that mirror, we are beginning to see not just ourselves, but the entire web of life in which we are embedded. AGI is not merely a tool for human advancement; it is an unprecedented lens through which we can perceive, understand, and potentially restore our relationship with the millions of other species that share this planet. This is the deepest governance challenge of the AGI era: to ensure that the intelligence we create serves not only human flourishing but the flourishing of the entire biosphere.

The New Eyes of Conservation

The most immediate contribution of AGI to our relationship with other species is the transformation of biodiversity monitoring. Advanced AGI-equipped drones are revolutionizing biological research by integrating the speed of UAVs with AI brains, adapting to different terrains and environments to provide clear images of ecosystems and identify endangered species. These systems are not passive observers; they are active participants in the conservation of life.

Project ZOA, awarded the Startup Innovation Award for Top AI Sustainability Project at Davos Innovation Week 2026, is building the Ecological Intelligence Dataset (EID)—verified biological ground truth for the intelligence age. The project is transforming biodiversity monitoring from analog field notes into machine-readable intelligence, creating the baseline measurements needed to track ecological change in an AI-transformed world. This is not merely about efficiency; it is about building the foundational knowledge that will allow us to navigate the ecological consequences of an AGI-transformed world.

Tools like Google's SpeciesNet, an open-source AI model that can classify nearly 2,500 animal categories in camera trap images, are already in use across the globe. Research groups are using it to spot pumas and ocelots in Colombia, elk and black bears in Idaho, cassowaries and musky rat-kangaroos in Australia, and lions and elephants in Tanzania's Serengeti. The AI model can process about 30,000 images a day on a standard laptop, or 250,000 or more images a day on a low-end gaming GPU. What once took years of manual labor now takes days.

In China's Xiamen marine reserve, an AI monitoring system for Chinese white dolphins has recorded more than 1,100 dolphin activity locations, with AI identification accuracy holding at about 85 percent. The system can issue alerts for suspected dolphin identifications, predict movement routes, and coordinate nearby cameras for tracking. Conservation efforts are shifting from traditional monitoring toward more intelligent and precise tracking.

Listening to the Web of Life

Beyond visual monitoring, AGI is opening new channels of communication with other species. The Coller Dolittle Challenge, a 5-year competition offering up to $10 million, seeks the first team that can achieve genuine two-way communication with animals. This year's finalists are working with dolphins, marmosets, cuttlefish, and nightingales, pushing the boundaries of what human-animal communication might look like.

As one researcher working with cuttlefish noted, "They are about as close to aliens as we'll ever get. They're invertebrates with astonishing behavioral complexity". The AI systems are grouping nightingale syllables by sound structure—a task that would take months to do by hand. These tools are not translating animal language into human terms; they are revealing the richness of communication systems that have evolved independently of our own.

This work carries profound ethical implications. A critical analysis of AI-based attempts to "translate" animal communication argues that rather than serving as transparent translation tools, AI systems should be understood as technosemiotic infrastructures which may support new interspecies resonances, provided they are embedded within critical and relational frameworks. The goal is not to make animals speak like humans, but to find new ways of listening.

The Governance of Interspecies Intelligence

The integration of AGI into our relationship with other species is not without risks. Large language models are being increasingly integrated into ecology and conservation science, but researchers caution that technical and ethical challenges must be addressed to ensure equitable and effective adoption, including inaccuracies, biases, and environmental impacts. The researchers recommend careful model selection, effective prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation to improve factual accuracy, human-in-the-loop validation, and broader efforts to promote inclusive development, capacity building, and appropriate governance.

The most profound governance question concerns the nature of intelligence itself. A framework presented at NeurIPS 2025 proposes that "intelligence is not viewed as problem-solution thinking but is instead recognized as a relational matrix". If intelligence emerges from relationships rather than residing in individual minds, then the goal of AGI development shifts from building a single superintelligence to cultivating an ecosystem of intelligences—one that includes not just humans and machines, but all species.

The Path Forward: A Biocentric AGI

For Global Future Nexus, the integration of AGI with the biosphere is a core governance imperative. The GFN Code of Ethics commits to rejecting discrimination based on substrate (biological or digital) or origin, and to explicitly factoring the energy footprint and environmental impact of advanced AI/AGI development into all sustainability initiatives.

The path forward requires a shift from anthropocentric to biocentric AGI. As Project ZOA's founder put it, "As we approach AGI, alignment isn't just about human values—it's about understanding the complex adaptive systems we're embedded in". The intelligence age needs ecological intelligence.

The question is not whether AGI will reshape our relationship with other species—it already is. The question is whether we will guide that reshaping with the wisdom, humility, and ethical commitment that the web of life deserves. The prism of life has many facets; our task is to ensure that AGI sees through all of them.
