The role of AGI in preserving ocean biodiversity

From autonomous agents that transform natural language queries into satellite-based maritime analyses to Digital Twins that simulate "what-if" scenarios for fisheries, artificial general intelligence is revolutionising ocean conservation. Yet experts are clear: AI does not replace human judgment—it extends human reach, amplifying the capacity of those who have devoted their lives to protecting the seas.
The Ocean Data Crisis
Marine ecosystems cover more than 70% of Earth's surface, yet habitats below 200 metres—more than 60% of the planet—remain largely unexplored. Scientists estimate there are now about 400 ocean "dead zones", more than double the number 20 years ago. By 2050, the oceans will likely contain more plastic than fish by weight, and by 2100, about 90% of marine species could be extinct.
The challenge is not just data collection—it is data integration. Collecting ecological data in marine settings is far more difficult than on land, producing spatiotemporally limited datasets that are fragmented, heterogeneous, and often incomplete. GenAI offers a solution by learning underlying statistical patterns to support data fusion, imputation, and enhanced interpretation across sources.
The AGI Toolkit
Agentic AI for Maritime Monitoring. The SeaScope project presents an explainable AI agent that accelerates interaction with complex Earth Observation workflows. Users express analytical questions in natural language—such as "Detect vessel activity and possible oil spills in May 2025"—which are transformed into transparent, executable analyses. The system links scientific literature, satellite data descriptions, and validated methods to automatically generate, execute, and explain workflows. Human expertise remains central: users inspect retrieved sources, review generated code, and validate analytical steps, ensuring scientific control and accountability.
Digital Twins of the Ocean. GenAI is being integrated into Digital Twin frameworks through several major European Union initiatives. The DIGI4ECO project creates a Digital Twin framework for restoration sites in marine ecosystems, using GenAI to model ecological responses to restoration actions by fusing historical datasets with real-time observations from robotic platforms. The ILIAD project, one of the EU's flagship Digital Twin initiatives, uses AI to enhance forecasting and scenario modelling for aquaculture, pollution control, and biodiversity conservation. GenAI generates synthetic data streams where empirical data are sparse, enabling near-real-time simulations and risk assessments.
On-Deck Fisheries AI captures video footage from fishing vessels, using AI to identify specific species caught or thrown into the ocean, helping crack down on illegal fishing. The system can "spot every instance where someone threw something overboard and identify exactly what it is", eliminating the need for human observers who have been murdered for exposing large-scale violations.
OptoScale, a Norwegian startup, uses AI-enabled cameras dropped into salmon cages to calculate each fish's weight in real time, determining the exact amount of food to provide—a huge savings in cost, waste, and ocean pollution.
The Governance Imperative
Translating AI's potential into operational practice requires more than proof-of-concept demonstrations. The Nature Conservancy's science report argues that "moving AI from a tool that speeds up data collection to one that genuinely understands ecosystems is the frontier that matters now". Key priorities include creating open-access benchmark datasets, developing systematic validation metrics for synthetic data, and integrating GenAI into real-time robotic operations.
Critically, "AI alone will not save the planet. It does not have the care, the judgment, or the accumulated wisdom that conservation requires. What it can do is extend human reach". The goal is AI as a trusted partner in a fundamentally human endeavour—technology that helps rather than hinders, that leaves the world better rather than littered with e-waste and abandoned pilot projects.
A Shared Horizon
For Global Future Nexus, the role of AGI in ocean conservation is central to planetary stewardship. The frameworks GFN is building—for AGI identity, cross-species trust, and anticipatory governance—must extend to marine ecosystems. The question is no longer whether AGI can help protect our oceans—it already does. The question is whether we will build the governance frameworks to ensure its deployment is equitable, sustainable, and aligned with the flourishing of all life on Earth.
