Elon Musk has spent more than a decade warning that artificial intelligence could be "summoning the demon." In July 2026, sitting across from The Economist's editor-in-chief, he said something that complicates that picture considerably: he's made peace with pressing ahead anyway. The AI that once terrified him is now the engine of a future he believes will deliver "amazing abundance for all".

The Timeline Sharpens

Musk's AGI timeline has crystallised with unusual precision. In January 2026, he told the "Moonshots" podcast that AGI would be achieved in 2026 itself—a claim he has repeated across multiple interviews. He has described this as an "age of amazing abundance, where anyone can have anything they can think of"—a world where scarcity is no longer the default condition of human life. In such a world, he has suggested, saving for retirement becomes "irrelevant," and work itself becomes optional.

The xAI Engine

This timeline is not abstract speculation—it is tied to specific infrastructure. Musk's xAI is training Grok 5 on the Colossus 2 supercomputer in Memphis, which reached 1 gigawatt of training capacity in early 2026. The scale is staggering: xAI completed a $200 billion Series E financing round in January 2026, with Nvidia and Cisco participating as strategic investors. Monthly operating costs reportedly exceed $1 billion.

Grok 5 itself is described as a ~6 trillion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model, with Musk having suggested that it could achieve AGI-level capabilities. The model is currently still in training, with early benchmarks on its Grok 4 series having already achieved 52% on the "Humanity's Last Exam" test.

A Shift, Not a Retraction

Musk's acceptance of AI's acceleration is not a retraction of his earlier warnings. He has not walked back his 10–20% estimate that AI could annihilate humanity—a figure he gave in March 2025. He has only reasoned that the good outcome is 80–90% likely, and that the train has already left the station.

"I can't see any way to really stop this incredible momentum of AI and robots," he told The Economist. "At times I sort of think, well, perhaps even if there was a stop button, we probably shouldn't press it, because the most likely outcome is incredible abundance for all".

The shift is philosophical: from summoning the demon to enjoying the ride. "Let's enjoy the ride," he said. It is a position that mirrors the industry's broader trajectory—the recognition that AGI is no longer a question of "if," but of "when" and "how we will manage it."
