Form follows function: should AGI bodies mimic nature or forge their own path?

The emergence of physical, embodied AGI forces a foundational question about the future of intelligence in our world: should these new forms of being mimic the species of our ecosystem, or should they find their own shape? While mimicry offers the comfort of familiarity, the research suggests that a more powerful and sustainable path lies in allowing AGI to chart its own morphological course.

The Trap of Anthropomorphism

The history of robotics is littered with the legacy of "humanoid" design. This bias often stems not from a clear-eyed assessment of functional requirements, but from the assumption that to interact meaningfully with the world, a machine must look like us. This assumption, as one analyst notes, may be a dead end. When the Chinese term for robot—机器人 (jīqìrén)—translates to "machine person," it linguistically embeds the idea that a robot must be human-like to be a legitimate machine. This has led to a design focus on anthropomorphic metaphors—faces, gestures, and voices—that may be more about pleasing our own aesthetic sensibilities than about creating effective agents.

The consequences are clear. As a senior researcher at Tencent cautions, "Too early locking the ultimate form of the future into the 'humanoid' shape may limit the imagination of the industry". We risk building elaborate imitations of human form while missing the opportunity to design bodies that are far better suited to specific tasks. The MIT Cog Project acknowledged decades ago that building a human-like body is an extraordinarily crude approximation, and there is a danger of "cargo-cult science, where only the broad outline form is mimicked, but none of the internal essentials are there at all".

The Case for "Monstrous" and Bespoke Forms

The alternative is a design philosophy that is liberated from the constraints of imitation. Instead of asking, "How can we make this AGI look like a human?", we should ask, "What form best enables this AGI to achieve its goals and interact with its environment?"

This approach is championed by researchers exploring soma design, who propose metaphors like "mechanical sympathy" and the "monster" as alternative design ideals. Mechanical sympathy, inspired by the concept of the umwelt, suggests designing robots with their own perceptual and motoric logic. Interaction becomes an exercise in learning to inhabit another creature's world, rather than forcing a machine into ours. The "monster" metaphor invites us to design hybrid, ambiguous, and expressive forms that challenge our assumptions about the boundaries between human and machine, opening up new possibilities for interaction that are "visceral, relational, and emotionally rich".

This is not just a theoretical exercise. The Tencent Robotics Lab explicitly designs "Max Dog," a robot that features a hybrid wheeled-leg system. It uses legs for complex terrain like stairs, but switches to wheels on flat surfaces—a form that is far more efficient for the human environment than a bipedal humanoid could ever be. This is form following function, not form following nature.

Embodied Intelligence, Not Embodied Humanity

The central argument for moving beyond mimicry is that we are building an entirely new form of intelligence. The debate over whether AGI requires a body is often framed around the need for "embodied intelligence"—the idea that cognition emerges from the interaction between an agent's body and its environment . However, this does not mean the body must be human. The ITU framework reframes robotics as a product space defined by motor control, body, and environment, and argues that "software-only ASI lacks physical-world agency". A physical presence is crucial for achieving real-world agency and for a true "perception-decision-action" closed loop. Yet, this physical presence can take an infinite variety of forms.

As one paper notes, "embodied intelligence is not defined by similarity to humans but by responsiveness and relational legibility". An AGI in a bespoke, non-humanoid body could develop a form of understanding—a way of "thinking"—that is profoundly different from our own, but no less valid or powerful. This "xenoid" intelligence would be alien, but its alienness is its strength, allowing it to perceive and act in ways we cannot. The governance of such a being will require frameworks that can accommodate its strange cognitive architecture, moving beyond the illusion of control that mimicry offers.
