From Cobb-Douglas models to the spectre of techno-feudalism, the economic transformation driven by Artificial General Intelligence is not a distant prospect—it is a structural rupture that challenges the very foundations of how wealth is created, distributed, and governed.
The End of Labour as We Know It
The emergence of AGI labour—AI agents and autonomous systems operating at near-zero marginal cost—reduces the marginal productivity of human labour, ultimately pushing wages toward zero. Unlike past technological advancements that primarily enhanced human productivity, AGI possesses the capability to fully replace both cognitive and physical labour. Operating at near-zero marginal cost and continuously improving through self-learning, AGI offers firms an overwhelmingly efficient alternative to human workers. As a result, labour demand is poised to collapse, triggering a downward spiral in wages and fundamentally disrupting the historical equilibrium between labour and capital.
This disruption is not hypothetical. At the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that within one to five years, up to half of entry-level white-collar jobs could disappear. AI was cited as a factor in nearly 55,000 U.S. job cuts in 2025. Employee anxiety has surged, with the proportion of workers fearing AI-driven job loss rising from 28% in 2024 to 40% in 2026. These are not projections—they are present realities.
The Ghost GDP Paradox
The economic logic is stark. In a Cobb-Douglas production framework, as AGI-driven capital accumulates and human labour approaches zero, wages converge to zero, and the share of labour income in GDP collapses. This creates a paradox: firms achieve unprecedented productivity while consumer purchasing power erodes due to mass unemployment. Analysts have termed this "ghost GDP"—productivity growth without corresponding consumption.
The dynamic threatens to destabilise markets, deepen economic inequality, and create a stark divide between AGI capital owners and those excluded from economic participation. Without intervention, the classical social contract—rooted in human labour as the foundation of economic participation—will become unsustainable. The current social contract, as articulated by Rousseau, must be renegotiated to prevent mass disenfranchisement.
Beyond Cobb-Douglas: The Moravec Modification
Yet the picture is not uniform. Moravec's Paradox—the observation that tasks humans find effortless often require enormous computational resources, while tasks humans find difficult require relatively modest computation—offers a crucial modification. When physical tasks constitute economic bottlenecks with sufficiently high computational requirements, the labour share of income can converge to a positive constant rather than zero.
In a CES production framework, the relationship between AGI labour and human labour depends on the elasticity of substitution. If AGI labour and human labour are perfect substitutes (ρ=1), full automation leads to direct displacement of human workers. If they are complements (ρ<0), increasing AGI labour enhances human labour productivity instead of replacing it. The answer to whether AGI will augment or replace human labour will determine long-term economic trajectories.
The Policy Response
Researchers have proposed several policy interventions to address these challenges:
Universal Basic Income (UBI) redistributing AGI-generated wealth
Public or cooperative AGI ownership ensuring broader access to AI-driven profits
Progressive AGI capital taxation mitigating inequality and sustaining aggregate demand
Former UBS Chairman Axel Weber has warned that AI could usher in a new era of inequality, creating "AI aristocrats" who profit disproportionately while others are left worse off. He urged governments to devise policies enabling workers to retrain, adapting economies to the transformation instead of simply taxing the industry.
Techno-Feudalism and the Future of Governance
The rise of AGI marks an existential rupture in economic and political order, dissolving the historic boundaries between labour and capital. Left unchecked, this shift risks exacerbating inequality, eroding democratic agency, and entrenching techno-feudalism—where ownership of AGI capital dictates economic power. The classical Social Contract—rooted in human labour as the foundation of economic participation—must be renegotiated to prevent mass disenfranchisement.
The implications extend beyond conventional automation narratives. By concentrating capital growth within self-reinforcing AGI loops, productive capacity can expand even as effective demand contracts, weakening the income-consumption feedback mechanisms essential for macroeconomic stability. Governance risks are equally structural: recursive AGI capital operates at scales and speeds exceeding the adaptive capacity of conventional oversight, marginalising social equity and participatory governance.
For Global Future Nexus, the economic transformation demands a renegotiation of the social contract. AGI-driven prosperity must be equitably distributed through mechanisms such as universal AI dividends, progressive taxation, and decentralised governance. The time for intervention is now—before intelligence itself becomes the most exclusive form of capital.
